In 2005, Village Voice covers became canvas to me. I’m sure it wasn’t the Village Voice’s first preference for their paper to be used as material in an artist’s work. But it happened. I was able to engage because they existed. And I’m glad it did. These have never been shown publicly. They’re a time […]

This was horizontally mounted using two L-hooks. These 1″ wonders can go where you might never have considered art could go. Slender and award winning these hand painted Kentucky/NYC tobacco sticks are uniquely versatile. Firstly, they’re solid wood. Averaging 52″ long by 1″ square I’ve repurposed these artifacts of tobacco farming into welcoming accents. Lean them […]
Cut from the farm’s old growth trees – Oak, Pecan, Chestnut – some of the tobacco sticks were made from wood that, no doubt, stood during American revolutionary days. I admire their strength, history and perseverance. For you who are new to owning a painted tobacco stick I recommend starting with one to lean in a corner. They’re 1″ slivers of life, […]
Seasonalities are raising their green heads. Here are two local photos on the way to my library…which you can see in the distance beyond the cab. Plus photos from my favorite local hiking destination, Harriman State Park, in Spring 2016 glory.
Flying into Phoenix and hiking the Southwest – Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Joshua Tree – brings such a wallop of a new environment…this year the blooming was super.
I’d stopped wearing neckties except for special occasions. Once I allowed myself to see my surplus of ties as usable canvas things moved fast. I took them, brushes in hand, and explored until themes emerged. What I painted fell into three categories. Crossbone, Counter-Stripe, and Freestyle With ties so fixed in men’s lives, my use of them as canvas never pulled them […]
Here a needle rises. Through it’s eye five ribbons thread intertwining into a single pointed nib. A young man holds aloft a scroll upon which the nib has scribed. A red dot, symbolic of the blood spot of creation, is evident and although small, prominent. Tip The Universe 2009 Acrylic and mixed medium on acetate 18 x […]
Fireworks, once it was hung, exhibited aspects of it’s natural properties…reflectiveness. Four images here demonstrate the effect of direct sun on it’s mirrored surface. Fireworks 2005 Acrylic and mixed medium on mirrored polymer disc 36″ diameter, round The disc itself has a legacy. Prior to it being painted by me it lined the face […]
This piece done in 2000 has earth and universe and man in relation to each other. Galactic Guy 2000 Acrylic and mixed medium on canvas Approx: 24 x 40 Gazing galactic style. The contemplative type, he is. Naked he is too.
Details, details, oh the pleasure of details. Like much of my work the dimensionality of the surface is lush. To help you see it… it’s a man leaning on his forearm against the branch of a tree.
It’s jaw dropping, witnessing each National Park, each natural landform new to one’s own eyes, new to experience. The visitor center at the Grand Tetons had an astonishingly simple presentation, among many, of how long our continent took to form as a land mass. Of course the uniqueness of the parks geologic formation is outlined as well. […]
WORDS ON FRAME: Life, Birth, Flesh, Bone, Soul, Point of View, Cast. It’s a toss of the coins. This is one of the first pieces where I wrote on the frame, painted on the glass, and affixed the two so as to make the frame and image inseparable.
This large piece has a determined surface. It’s canvas is picnic cloth from Kmart. It’s a fabric I’ve used in three pieces now. Here it’s an American man steeped in dynamic adornment.
This floral is painted on clear canvas, both sides, using dimensional acrylics and mixed medium. There’s a lot of rich surface joy in this piece, lots of depth.
For a time after 9/ll a symbolic shift I took was to paint suns red, skies red. Whether what’s painted in this piece is a sun or simply a red radiance of life, it is held aloft by five noble grass blades. Nature supporting life.
