These twelve black and white pieces (photographed not quite black and white here) were done in one fell swoop, and consecutively, in 2006. I’d been using white in a lot of my art and I wanted to see what I could do with white on it’s own. Thus black boards.
My direction to myself was “do.”
Years later, in looking them over freshly, I see textures and turbines and gratitude and awe. I’m glad I did it when I was younger.
A 20 year distance from then to now. I had given myself an assignment. 12 boards.
Each was an opportunity. Even more elevated as I got closer to the end. The first, the beacon torch, and Lady Liberty’s hand being kissed for holding it – a thank you. The guy with a tree growing from his chest. The guy with the universe and his hands held wide and open. The last, with it’s hidden Y.
For me it was a reunion. I hope you enjoy meeting these guys for the first time.
